Body Printmaking Performance

Safety.Sanctuary.Set of Web.

The amazing memories have been masterfully stored
by David Hegarty, who had created a photographic cord.

I attended short printmaking workshops in Cork Printmakers on a few occasions. It is such a phenomenal place and I discovered etching and screen printing. The processes are rather intricate and as much as I was drawn to finding out more I did not have enough time nor money to be involved with it on a more advanced level. Yet, everything I was exposed to was brewing in my head.

There was a workshop in Uillinn West Cork Arts Centre run by Charlotte Donovan in 2018. It involved a traditional printing press and everyone was creating individual prints. This was the moment when I felt a very strong urge to present the Safety.Sanctuary.Set of Web. set in this context. Also, other elements were layering, like movement, trees (from roots to crowns) and transitions (which are also reflected in the poem). These terms were coming forward as a result of collecting and seeing many and diverse answers to the questionnaire about safety and interaction with many people. However, I knew I needed another person and I was not a professional dancer. I introduced the idea to Patrycja Łaskawiec and we were very eager to do it together. She is not a professional dancer either but loves dancing/movement and it was the necessary glue. I also took her to an earlier mentioned workshop in Uillinn so she already had a basic idea of printmaking. Now, we just needed to figure out how to use our bodies to do prints through the movement and create an image of a tree at the end. We achieved it to some extent but I think I will wet the paper more when I do it next time. The end visual result was important so that people recognise the image at the end but the process of movement and printmaking was really at the heart of it. It was a seriously time consuming preparation and performance but I feel as if a tree has spoken through this piece.
